It\u2019s like losing pixels in a TV screen \u2013 at first you can still see the image but over time the image becomes distorted as you lose more and more pixels.\u201d<br><br>This vision impairment can affect patients quite drastically. \u201cThe macula is the most important part of your vision because it gives you detailed vision and colour vision,\u201d says Dr. Miranda. \u201cIt\u2019s the part of your eye that you see faces with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftnref1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftnref1\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMD can present in two different forms: dry and wet.<a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;\u201cDry AMD is the accumulation of drusen,<a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;which are usually like a cholesterol lipofuscin exudate from the cell,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;explains Dr. Miranda. \u201cThis can damage the photoreceptors and cells in the macula, sometimes to a devastating effect, especially if the dry AMD progresses to something called geographic atrophy,<a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;which is a subset of dry AMD.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, however, the dry forms of AMD are milder, whereas wet AMD leads to more severe vision loss.<a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;\u201cIn wet AMD, fluid leaks between and under the retina,\u201d says Dr. Miranda. \u201cYou get damage at the cellular level and the body responds to the leaking fluid by scarring, which devastates the vision.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/macumira.com\/blog\/understanding-the-factors-that-lead-to-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd\/#_ftn6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For adults hoping to prevent or delay the onset of AMD, knowledge is power. \u201cCellular death occurs in aging, so a lot of the eye diseases, including AMD, are a result of aging,\u201d says Dr. Miranda. \u201cBut that\u2019s only one of the factors.
